Build Credit Without Taking on Debt

Build Credit Without Taking on Debt

Summary

Being "credit invisible" doesn't mean you're stuck. In fact, there are more options than ever to start building credit history safely—and without taking on heavy debt.

In this episode of Credit Corner, Chief Credit Officer Ellen Falbo explains how you can create a credit history without relying solely on traditional loans or credit cards. Free tools like Experian Go and Experian Boost allow you to use bills you already pay, like rent and utilities, to build your credit profile.

If you feel comfortable with it, opening a credit card (and using it responsibly) is another way to show you can manage credit well. Ellen shares that you don’t have to rack up debt to build a healthy credit history—you just have to show good habits over time.

Transcript

There are so many different ways to build credit without paying an arm and a leg and without being trapped in debt.

If you want to build credit and you don't wanna take on a credit card or a loan, go look for free tools like Experian Go or Experian Boost that will let you use bills you're already paying to build credit. There's also products in which your rent can get reported to the bureau and that can help you build credit.

If you can control your spending and use a credit card safely, getting a credit card that you might not even purchase anything on can also actually help build your credit history. So there's a lot of ways without getting in debt, that you can build a credit score and start to show that you know how to use credit wisely.
