How to get over your fear of credit
To overcome a fear of credit, start by opening a low-limit secured credit card with a strict spending cap of about $300 a month. Practicing responsible habits, like only using your card to pay for gas and paying the bill in full, helps build credit history and offers better fraud protection than a debit card.

ELLEN: The best way to get over your fear of credit is to get a credit product that you feel comfortable using responsibly. Fear surrounding money, whether that's credit, managing your investments, really everything, exists at all levels of society and all ages. And money is definitely kind of a taboo subject in our society and therefore people don't feel comfortable really talking about the pros and cons. So if you go and you get, say, a $300 secured credit card, you can't spend more than $300 a month. So keeping that limit low, it can feel constraining if you have a low credit limit card, but on the flip side, it's hard to get in too much trouble. Having that low-limit credit card, that you can start practicing, just put your gas purchases on that credit card. Using a credit card at the gas pump is a great safety thing. Gas pumps very commonly have credit card skimmers. They can be a kind of key vector for people to steal your information. So if you're using your debit card, you're putting current money in your bank account at risk. If you use your credit card, there's quite a bit of fraud protections there and so you can start to establish those really good financial habits of paying that bill off in full every month. So that gives you that credit history. It's safer from a fraud perspective. And, you know, if you have a low-limit card and you're just using it for this one purchase, can really help with kind of that impulsivity that can get a lot of young people in trouble.
